A reminder that two heritage videos telling the story of the Gordon Bennett Race will be available to view in Kilcullen Heritage Centre from today, August 15, in the afternoons through Friday, from 2.30pm-5pm, writes Brian Byrne. The showings are hosted by Kilcullen Heritage Group as part of National Heritage Week 2023.
They tell the story of ‘How Ireland Saved Motor Sport’ and were researched and produced by Bailey and Blake Video Production with funding from the Heritage Council under the Heritage Plan Fund.
They are the result of a collaboration between the Heritage Offices of Carlow, Kildare and Laois County Councils.
Admission is free, drop by and meet with Kilcullen Heritage Group and enjoy the local memorabilia in the Centre.
Other events nearby today include a family-friendly Native Flowers morning at the Irish Wheelchair Association's John Sullivan Centre in Clane, beginning at 11am. A Butterly Identification Walk and Talk begins at the same time in the Bog of Allen Nature Centre at Lullymore. This evening, Monasterevin Tidy Towns are hosting a biodiversity management event in St Mary's Avenue Garden from 6.30pm. A walk and talk by Paddy Behan and Ger McCarthy of the historic buildings in Naas will begin at 7.30pm, starting from Market Square.
The Diary's linked spreadsheet of Heritage Week events through County Kildare can be accessed here. They are tabulated both by town and by date.
