Happy day at Picnic on the Green

The Picnic on the Green had a very happy attendance today at Old Kilcullen, with lots of things of interest and, importantly, the weather held beautiful, writes Brian Byrne.
Music was once again by John Kelly and Terry McNally, who have been playing together for some 30 years now. There was rapt attention from those interested in the discussion on heritage aspects of the area with Gerry O'Donoghue, historian James Durney. and Michael O'Connell who has a particular interest in Old Kilcullen.
A kick-a-ball at a gigantic dartboard was a very popular attraction for young football experts and adults alike. Sumo suits wrestling for children proved to be more difficult than anticipated but did offer some hilarious spectacle. Egg and spoon and relay races brought back echoes of school sports in past times. We saw a rope laid out for a Tug O War but couldn't wait for the contest this year. There was also a nice lineup of old cars.
The big success of the day, though, was how it brought so many members of the Old Kilcullen Community together. Chat, food and companionship. Just like used to be the way with annual parish Field Days, which seem to have disappeared.
Congratulations very much due to the organisers.
A selection of photos shown in this post, but ALL the Diary's photos from the day are here.
