Scoil Bhríde pupils walk to remember 1798
Continuing what has become a strong Scoil Bhríde tradition, children from the senior classes walked to Old Kilcullen yesterday to mark the anniversary of the battle there in the rebellion of 1798, writes Brian Byrne.
Many were dressed in costumes of rebels and redcoats and carried replicas of the pikes and musket weaponry of the time and occasion.
They were led by teacher Muiris Ó’Raoghaill and colleagues from the school, and prior to the walk had been given a talk by local historian Gerry O'Donoghue who has a special interest in the local 1798 battle.
At the site around the tower near where the rebels' camp had been, they took in views which would have changed little since that fateful 24 May when the rebels initially trounced the English forces in the Common down below, but were later taken prisoner after fighting on the bridge in Kilcullen town.
The Scoil Bhríde contingent then settled down to have their lunch break around the tower.
We have a selection of pictures here, and all the Diary's photographs of the morning can be accessed here.
