Picnic on the Green a resounding success

This afternoon's Picnic on the Green at Old Kilcullen was a resounding success, not least because the weather was just right, writes Brian Byrne.
Of course, the organisational skills of the Old Kilcullen Area Community Association had a little to do with it too ... and the most important element, it wouldn't have been the party that it was at all if it wasn't for the great turnout.
In addition to refreshments through the afternoon and tug-o-war events for both adults and children, there were other attractions. Vintage music. Vintage cars. Vintage chat. And vintage visitors like the Schwer family including Billy and sisters over from England to enjoy the company just down the road from where once was the family pub.
Kildare's Heritage Officer Brigid Loughlin gave some intriguing preliminary detail from the recent archaeological surveys of Old Kilcullen, and in a similar vein Michael O'Connell spoke about his own concepts of medieval Old Kilcullen and the model he has made to show that.
The Kilcullen First Responders were available for both demonstrations and any emergency, and are also signing up volunteers who want to learn to use the new defibrillator coming to the Halverstown area: Christy Howard took a couple of lessons today.
It was the third Picnic on the Green since the inaugural one in August 2019 ... the 2020 one wasn't held because of the pandemic.
