On this day in 1986, two Soviet cosmonauts were launched aboard a Soyuz spacecraft to become the first occupants of the Mir space station. The station remained in orbit for over 15 years and was occupied by crews from various nations for more than a dozen of those years until it was deorbited in March 2001.
