Up to 70 women joined Cllr Tracey O'Dwyer in Fallons this afternoon for a lunch to mark International Women's Day next Tuesday, writes Brian Byrne.
The proceeds of the event are going to St Brigid's Hospice on The Curragh, and Cllr O'Dwyer thanked those who had come to support the cause. She recalled that the last time they were all together was two years ago, and within the week the country was in lockdown.
"Little did we know what was ahead of us," she said. "It was a tough two years, especially for women. We were doing a job, maybe, we were trying to keep the family going, we were home-schooling, and we were also taking on the emotional support of our families. I think today we really appreciate being out together again and having a chat."
The guest speaker was Member of the European Parliament Maria Walsh, who addressed a number of issues in her presentation including equality of pay and opportunities for women.
Minister Martin Heydon also dropped in and, referencing his own mother who had been widowed at a young age and had to run the family farm while also raising her children, he spoke about inequalities in pensions for women, and issues about recognition of men and women being equal partners, especially in farming.
