Brannoxtown CNS students seek Climate Change views
What do Irish students believe about Climate Change and how do they feel about it? writes Dr Sarah FitzPatrick, Principal of Brannoxtown Community National School. Senior Room students at the school have designed a Climate Change survey to answer this question.
The survey, and proposal for the BTYSTE Primary Science Fair, complements research published last year by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Climate Change in the Irish Mind (2021). The EPA surveyed 4,000 adults aged 18-65. Students’ views were not accounted for. But, at Brannoxtown CNS, we believe that the leaders of tomorrow are sitting in the classrooms of today; students’ voices are critical to Climate Change discussions. Our survey is for all students from 3rd class in primary school to 6th year at post-primary.
Students at Brannoxtown CNS plan to fill this gap by finding out if/how students’ and adults’ views differ on knowledge of Climate Change, understanding of its impact, concerns about it, causes of it and willingness to act to stop it. Our research asks about students’:
⁃ Knowledge and beliefs about Climate Change
⁃ Understandings of the impact of Climate Change on Irish people
⁃ Concerns about Climate Change
⁃ Beliefs about the importance of Climate Change for the Irish Government
⁃ Causes of Climate Change
⁃ Willingness to act to stop Climate Change.
The EPA reported that their survey took 25 minutes to complete. The survey by students at Brannoxtown CNS was designed to take 1-2 minutes to complete and responses are due by Friday, March 11th. Findings will be shared via the school’s Twitter account @BrannoxtownCNS and published in the April issue of the Bridge Magazine. Please share the survey link (below) with any students from 3rd class (primary) to 6th year (post-primary).
