Weatherday: Donna Berta's legacy
Lunchtime conversation, Dubrovnik (2008). |
Largely dry today, some sunny spells but mostly cloud.
It will be mild, with temperatures up to 10deg in light southerly winds.
On this day in 2001, the Leaning Tower of Pisa was reopened to the public after the completion of extensive works over a decade to stabilise the structure and partially correct the tilt. The tower is the campanile of Pisa Cathedral, the foundations of which were laid, badly, in 1174.
Headline: The beginnings of the Tower of Pisa were the purchase of stones for its foundation from a legacy of Pisa resident Donna Berta di Bernardo.
