Weatherday: Belt of the crozier fails

Cloudy, wet and blustery this morning, with some heavy bursts of rain. A clearance through the afternoon will bring brighter weather, perhaps a sunny spell or two with an intermittent shower.

Temperatures up to 17deg in fresh southerly winds, easing to moderate later and light overnight.

On this day in 1955, a football match between Dalymount and a Yugoslavia team went ahead to a capacity crowd despite the vociferous objection of Archbishop of Dublin John Charles McQuaid. Three years earlier, the Archbishop had been successful in having a similar match between Ireland and Yugoslavia cancelled because the visitors were from a ‘Godless country’.
