Happy outcome for little Cormac Byrne's leukaemia, featured in today's Indo

The story of how Colin and Clare Byrne's son Cormac has been getting home treatment for his leukaemia diagnosed as a toddler is featured in the Health section of today's Irish Independent, writes Brian Byrne. Cormac is the grandson of Josephine Byrne in Kilcullen and the late Des Byrne.

The feature details how Cormac's diagnosis three years ago was a bombshell for his parents, who live in Cork city. They have another son, Donnacha.

Though Cormac's initial chemotherapy treatment took place in Crumlin Children's Hospital in Dublin, most of it has been made possible at home in Cork due to the Paediatric Oncology Outreach Nursing Service (POONS) at Mercy Hospital in Cork. He will be finishing his treatment in another month.

POONS is funded by the Mercy Hospital Foundation and requires €30,000 each year to keep going. This Friday, 22 October, the public are being asked to support Mercy Heroes, helping to raise funds for the Mercy Kids & Teens Appeal to support the youngest patients at the hospital.
