Cllr Tracey pushes for fix to traffic lights

Kildare County Council officials are to give fresh consideration to upgrading the traffic lights in Kilcullen following further representations by Cllr Tracey O’Dwyer, writes Brian Byrne.
The councillor had raised the matter by motion at a recent meeting of the Kildare-Newbridge Municipal District, but had declared the response ‘unsatisfactory’.
The report to her motion had said that the long-called for addition of a filter for traffic onto the New Abbey Road would be reviewed at the next upgrade of the lights system.
Subsequently Cllr O’Dwyer queried officials as to why that hadn’t been done during upgrades to the lights in April (pictured above), when more efficient lighting units were installed. Following a discussion, the councillor elicited an agreement to consider the matter further.
The Diary understands that the upgrade could be carried out in conjunction with planned new lights at Market Square related to facilitating traffic and pedestrian safety from the Riverside Manor development. In ideal circumstances, this could happen before the end of the year.
The need for a filter at the lights, to provide a safe opportunity for traffic coming from the south to turn left onto New Abbey Road, has been contentious since 2006, and the Diary has been reporting on it since then.
