Royal Sites of Ireland survey under way

A survey on the Royal Sites of Ireland, which includes Dun Ailinne, is now under way as part of efforts to have them listed by UNESCO, writes Brian Byrne.

The other sites are Emain Macha, Armagh; Crúachain in Tulsk, Co Roscommon; Caiseal na Rí in Tipperary, Tara in Meath, and Uisneach in Co Westmeath. They were the centres of individual kingdoms which roughly corresponded to today's four provinces, plus a fifth kingdom of Meath.

Public feedback is requested on a special website which has been established at royalsites.ie. The results will be used as part of a proposed application to have the Royal Sites included on the Renewed National UNESCO Tentative List.

The survey is anonymous but collects data on participants' demographics, their knowledge of the Royal Sites, what they think the effects of UNESCO recognition would be. If participants  would like to be kept updated on progress, an email address is requested.

It is emphasised on the site that Dun Ailinne is on private farm land and may not be visited without the permission of the Thompson family.
