On this day in 1973, Arab members of the OPEC oil-producing cartel initiated the first oil crisis by cutting exports and embargoing sales to 'unfriendly' states during the Yom Kippur war against Israel. Petrol queues and local ad hoc rationing happened in many western countries, including Ireland.

(Headline is how I tried to manage the queues at the Hideout Filling Station in 1973, when everyone was trying to buy more petrol than they needed.)
