Men's Health Week — ease up on the news

"Avoid the news every hour on the hour."

Despite the fact that for many years I compiled and presented RTE's radio news for every hour, writes Brian Byrne, I can absolutely appreciate that piece of advice from Mick Osborne, Wellbeing Tutor with the County Kildare Leader Partnership.

The modern constant news cycle is by its nature a repetitive beast, hammering home the stories that many listeners or viewers have largely heard or seen several times already.

And since national and international news interest is largely concentrated on the negative, that repetition can't be good for mental health.

The context of this today is to remind men around Kilcullen and the wider Diary readership that this is International Men's Health Week.

It's a good point for us to step back for a few minutes and take a look at our lives, lifestyles, and life choices, and see are they what we really want them to be? Maybe to book that put-off appointment with the doctor or dentist, physio or therapist?

If you want a little guidance on this, Mick Osborne has a good piece here for 21st Century Man.

And I'll leave this with another apt quote from him: "Recognise your achievements on the day and not your omissions or failures."

That'll be the good news, then.
