Viewpoint: thoughts for 2020

Welcome to 2020. We don't do new year resolutions here, writes Brian Byrne, but let's hope for a peaceful, healthy year for all our readers and friends, and as prosperous a one as any of you need it to be.

We wish all those in charge of our country to be a little more conscious of their responsibilities than of their political fortunes, and that maybe humanity might trump regulations a little more when it comes to making policy to help the less fortunate. Might be too much to ask that those running the nations of the planet do the same, but we can wish for it anyhow.

Back in Kilcullen, it would be nice to see a little more thoughtfulness in some areas. Discarding of litter is still a problem, though much improved where new bins have been installed. The state of the footpaths at times, though, indicates that there are still some people who don't care what their dogs do while being walked on the same. And obstructive car parking ... well, we deliberately don't publish all the pictures that are sent in, but it's a major issue of 'don't think/don't care'.

We have a planet that's not well at the moment. Which is not good for our own health either. We can help in small ways as individuals, and in larger ways as communities. Let's all think a little more on those ways for 2020. The Climate Action classes in CPC, and the recently formed Climate Action Group in Kilcullen Community Action may be points of focus here in 2020 on the whole issue. And the Sustainable Energy Community group may have some pointers to local initiatives in this area.

Most of all, though, we wish for 2020 a continuation of the same close community that we are fortunate to have in Kilcullen, where the process of walking up and down the street can be slowed because of the people one meets who want to say hello or chat.

Worth more than gold, that.
