Issues on a public car park for Kilcullen can be dealt with, councillor says

A number of issues raised today by Kildare County Council in relation to a call for a public car park to be provided for Kilcullen are described as 'achievable' by Cllr Tracey O'Dwyer, writes Brian Byrne.

She was commenting on a report to her motion on the provision of such a car park, raised at today's meeting of the Kildare-Newbridge Municipal District.

The report noted that the provision of a car park would require land, adequate infrastructure, funding, and enforcement resources.

It also said the members would need to consider if the proposed car park would involve pay-parking, which would require a bye-law. If it is not pay-parking, then there would be issues around enforcement, maintenance, and funding in the long term.

Cllr O'Dwyer pointed out the objectives of the Council in the current Local Area Plan for Kilcullen, in relation to the provision of accessible car parking. Noting that existing public car parking is along the street and in the market square, the plan also says that the provision of public parking 'will be carried out at appropriate locations if required'.

The councillor welcomed the response from the officials, and asked the the Council pursue the securing of further public parking for Kilcullen, and let the members of the MD 'deal with any kind of obstacles if and when they arise'.
