CSI Dog Poop
A town in Spain some years ago insisted that all dog owners submit their pet to the local council for DNA registration, writes Brian Byrne.
It meant that wardens didn't have to catch in the act dog owners allowing their pets foul public places. A sample, a check with the DNA database, and public prosecution and shaming became possible. The incidence of this major nuisance plummeted by 80pc.
The recent meeting of Kilcullen Community Action heard that the dog poop problem in the town is as bad as ever, following a period when the KCA awareness programme seemed to have been helping reduce it.
KCA chair Ann Cashman said it is a pity that the dog-owners concerned don't seem to be using the bins installed during the last year.
The Spanish town's solution looks like it should be suggested to Kildare County Council.
