Blue spaces are not loading bays
To be honest, the Diary gets too many instances of inconsiderate and illegal parking to post them all, but this one is a bit beyond the usual.
A courier delivering to a shop in town today decided the disabled parking bay outside Eurospar was a convenient place to work from (for clarification, he was not delivering to Eurospar). Though the illegality was pointed out to him several times by the reader who took the photograph, he wasn't inclined to move his van. "He just kept making fun of the matter, and of me," the reader told the Diary.
Even when our correspondent eventually phoned the courier company's head office, he says he didn't get very far, other than an 'we'll deal with it', without taking details or even asking for the photos. "He eventually did move when a space down the road became available, but not when I was asking him to."
The incident highlights a few things. One, there's a very high level of inconsideration amongst drivers, both private and commercial. Two, there's a real need for a few commercials 'loading bay' areas in town, within trolleying distance of shops. Three, nobody who is offending is getting any tickets.
A fixed-charge fine for misusing a disabled parking spaces is €150 with 28 days to pay. If unpaid in that timeframe, the fine increases to €225 with a further 28 days to pay. Both traffic wardens and the Gardai may issue these parking fines. No penalty points apply in Ireland, though they do in some other jurisdictions.
