Kilcullen Badminton Club update

South West League roundup
So the madness of the leagues has started and as always this time of year is a busy one for match secretaries and club secretaries all over the country, writes Enda O’Neill, Kilcullen Badminton Club Match Secretary.

Week 1 and 2 in the South West League were a busy ones. Our Grade 5 Ladies captained by Teresa McGlynn started their campaign off when they visited Mountmellick on Monday 07 Oct. The ladies got off to a great start with a 4-0 win.

Next out were Kilcullen’s Grade 3 men captained by Owen Wallace, who travelled to Killoughy on Wednesday 09 October, another good result for KBC with a 3-1 victory. Thursday 10 October the grade 3 men hosted Portlaoise. A tougher test for our men but they managed to secure a 2-2 draw after being 2-0 down after the first 2 games. A good start for the lads all the same, with a special mention for Vincent Coller who subbed for both matches.

Tuesday 15 October Teresa and her Grade 5 ladies hosted Mountmellick in their second South West League match, the girls managed to add another 4 points to their tally beating a dejected Mountmellck team again 4-0. Our Gr 5 Ladies sit comfortably top of their table with two wins from two.

Tuesday 15 October saw our Grade 2 Men captained by Murt Dunne open their South West League season with a home fixture against Baltinglass. In a one sided affair the Kilcullen men didn’t hold back and secured a 4-0 win in front of the home support. Great start for Murt, John McGrane, Dave Jackson and Gareth Hogan.

Dublin District League
Two Dublin District Cup matches this week, first out were our Division 7 Mix who visited Danum in Rathgar on Monday 15 October. This team captained by Keith O’Neill shows some promise for the club this season. It was a tough first outing for the team though, a cup match being a knock out fixture. Keith and Kasi Va were first out and took their Men’s in 3 sets. Next out were Mari Gallagher and Teresa McGlynn. The KBC ladies were cruising and took the first set convincingly, then disaster struck half way through the second set with Teresa sustaining an injury that put her out of the match. The KBC outfit were now 2-1 down losing the ladies and having to concede the ladies singles because of the injury. Keith and Mari went out to play mix doubles and won it bringing the match back to 2-2. So it all hinged on the final game of the night with Kasi in the men’s singles. In an absolute cracker of a game Danum just shaded it in a 3 set game. Hard luck to Keith and his team who now can concentrate on their Dublin District League, their next opponents is Trinity in mid-November.

On Thursday 17 November Kilcullen's Div 7 Men captained by Kasi Va visited Ashbourne again in a Cup fixture. This was be a great start to the cup for the KBC Men, first men of Kasi and Keith took their game in three sets 20-22, 21-14, 18-21. Second men’s Ross Cole and Ramlal Hooda lost their game in a very close three set game. Keith and Ross took third men’s 12-21, 9-21 in a very one sided game. Kasi and Ramlal just had to take one set in the last game to put KBC through to the next round and the two boys didn’t disappoint wining the valuable set 17-21. So our Division 7 Men march on to the next round of the cup, well done to all the teams.

A busy November ahead with 28 League games to play, a lot of exciting matches to look forward too.

Summer Club
It is worth mentioning that it was a great summer for Kilcullen Badminton Club. The club saw an increase in numbers and would like to welcome the new members who joined. It’s great to see new members to strengthen Club and teams, and it also keeps things fresh and brings a new lease of life to the club and its existing members. It’s because of these new faces that KBC now have some new teams in DDL and SWL at beginner level. The club would like to wish Audrey Moore, Austin Egan, Fergus Ryan, Peter Curly, Andrea Kis, Qaisim Butt, Abin Jose, Harshal, Russ, Barbara Quinn and Niav Cahill good luck in their new season. We also welcomed so old faces back which is also great to see. Thanks also to John Mullen, Clive Cole, Barry O’Neill, Jen Monaghan, Vincent Coller and Oisin Egan for running the summer club

Good luck to all the teams in their upcoming fixtures.
