Kilsaran planning application for Ballyshannon
Kilsaran Concrete is submitting a planning application for a new sand and gravel extraction operation at Racefield, Ballyshannon, writes Brian Byrne.
The extraction and processing will take place over 12 years and the c17.2 acre site will then be restored over a two year period, according to the proposal.
The Non-Technical Summary of Environmental Impact Assessment Report with the proposal says the project will involve 72 HGV truck movements a day between the site and the Kilcullen Junction 2 with the M9. The summary doesn't specify where the trucks will go from there except to 'Kilsaran owned and operated facilities in the Dublin/Leinster area'.
The material from the extraction site will be used for 'value-added concrete product manufacture at other Kilsaran facilities'. The Kilsaran facility at Brownstown/Silliot Hill in Kilcullen has been granted permission to operate a new concrete tile manufacturing operation, despite a number of local objections which included concerns about 'increased HGV traffic' through Kilcullen.
The material from the proposed extraction at Ballyshannon is believed by locals familiar with the area to be particularly suitable for the new Brownstown factory product. The hourly HGV movements from the Ballyshannon facility are estimated by the company to average four trucks per hour.
Kilsaran trucks movement through Kilcullen is already very high over many years, due to transport of material between company sites on The Curragh and Halverstown to facilities that include Brownstown. A query some weeks ago by the Diary about the actual numbers of current company HGVs through the town has not yet received a reply.
The site notice for the Racefield application was erected yesterday.
