Walking to school 'part of' solution to congestion, safety

Having children walk to school is 'part of the solution' to traffic congestion and road safety in the vicinity of schools, councillors of the Kildare-Newbridge MD were told at its recent meeting, writes Brian Byrne.

That general comment was made by officials during the response to a motion by Cllr Kevin Duffy that the Council's Roads, Transportation and Public Safety Department do a road safety survey in Monasterevin in relation to three local schools. He was told that the Council's Road Safety Officer had visited the schools in the past to ensure that children walking to and from schools are aware of road and traffic safety.

Cllr Duffy then suggested that it would be a good idea if the Road Safety Officer conducted a workshop with all councillors on the issue of road safety in the vicinity of schools.

In Kilcullen, concerns about safety at school drop-off and pick-up times have been a live issue for some years.
