Halverstown NS students complete cycling skills course

For the last eight weeks, pupils at St Joseph's NS Halverstown were taught safe cycling, in a programme operated by the Clane Cycling School, writes Brian Byrne.

Among the elements of the programme were road safety skills, hand signalling and checking traffic at junctions.

There were fun games too like 'bike wars' and 'cycling limbo' and it all culminated in an on-road cycling session where the children went out in groups to put their skills into action.

According to Principal David Dempsey it was a great learning experience for advanced and beginner cyclists. "Something that every child should get the chance to do," he added.

As someone who cycled to school in Newbridge for years, along with a cohort of other Kilcullen lads — Peter and John Bardon, Denis and Eugene Brennan, Seamus Orford — your editor agrees. It should be part of every school's curriculum. Considering some of the antics we got up to then, and rather miraculously survived, we could have done with it ourselves ...
