Kilcullen will not participate in Community Games this year due to a shortage of volunteers, writes Brian Byrne. The situation threatens to end the long-standing involvement of Kilcullen children in the event.
In a statement on behalf of Kilcullen Community Games, Treasurer Jean Mahon says the group regrets having to cease an activity that has facilitated huge participation by children of all age groups, with some of the contestants having gone on to represent Kilcullen and Kildare at Leinster and national level, often bringing home medals.
"Over the years, we have organised numerous competitions – including Art, Swimming, Chess, Gymnastics, Model Making, Athletics, Pitch and Putt, Handwriting, Soccer, Table Quiz, Cycling, Cross Country, GAA, and Tag Rugby, to name but a few," she says. "It is a great pity that this community group can no longer keep going, but we have had no new volunteers to come on board and help with the running of events."
She said the group would like to thank everyone who has helped over the many decades — the staff at Kilcullen Library and Scoil Bhride for allowing it to hold some of the events, Crookstown Athletics Club, the Defence Forces Swimming Pool, and many, many others who have been involved over the years.
