Camphill commemoration of Battle of Old Kilcullen
Members of the three local Camphill Communities walked through Kilcullen this afternoon handing out 'Victory!' broadsheets announcing the defeat of British forces by Irish rebels at Old Kilcullen, writes Brian Byrne.
Dressed in the costumes of the time, their presentation was a commemoration of the Battle of Old Kilcullen in the 1798 Rebellion on 24 May, when rebels entrenched inside the churchyard forced British soldiers and yeomen back three times.
The British were led by General Dundas. The broadsheet noted that Dundas is 'on the retreat', with his officers Cooke and Erskine and more than 20 of their men dead.
The group were coached in the performance by Sarah Gillespie of Bridge Camphill and Mary Duffin, a facilitator working with the Kildare Wicklow Education & Training Board.
The presentation was part of the Kilcullen 700 commemorations and was a project in conjunction with KWETB. Earlier this year they demonstrated their work in progress at an event in Kilcullen Library.
