Camphill 1798 showed 'amazing talent'

A presentation in Kilcullen Library by members of the three Camphill Communities in the area focused on what was in the minds of ordinary people during the 1798 Rebellion, writes Brian Byrne.

With a splendid attention to detail in the costuming of the performers, the event was a showing of a work in progress by the group, who plan to give a further performance in May, in or around the anniversary of the Rebellion which included a significant battle in Old Kilcullen.

There is already a suggestion that the group might perform their updated version at the site of the battle, but that's subject to agreement and logistics at the time.

The group were coached in the performance by Sarah Gillespie of Bridge Camphill and Mary Duffin, a facilitator working with the Kildare Wicklow Education & Training Board.

Foryana Pshyk of the Aontas Adult Learner Festival, which was associated with the event in conjunction with the Kilcullen 700 programme, commended the performance and the work of the coaches.

"This showed how drama can be used to explore historical events," she said at the conclusion of the presentation. "It also demonstrated an amazing talent within this group in Kilcullen."
