Warning about thefts from cars

The Kildare Garda Division has issued a general warning advice to car owners about safe parking, writes Brian Byrne.

In a Text Alert today they have launched a 'Park Smart' initiative advising owners of cars and vans to always park their vehicles in a secure, well-lit area.

They also urge owners to always take their property with them when they leave the vehicle, and to lock it and set the alarm if fitted.

At home, vehicle keys should be kept safely away from windows and letterboxes.

About €340,000 worth of property is stolen from vehicles in Ireland each year, according to An Garda, most commonly cash, laptops, tools, sunglasses, jewellery and sports equipment.

They also warn that one in three vehicles broken into in residential areas are unlocked.
