Irish Seed Savers workshops

A number of workshops and events organised by the Irish Seed Savers Association may be of interest to those who care about conserving Irish biodiversity, writes Brian Byrne.

Held at the Association's headquarters in Scariff, Co Clare, they cover a variety of gardening and related subjects ranging from creating an orchard, birdwatching for beginners, making herbal medicines, to 're-wilding' gardens. Full day courses, held on Saturdays, cost €70.

The association was set up in 1991 with the aim of saving Ireland's heritage and heirloom seeds of vegetables, potatoes, grains and fruit trees.

The organisation now has more than 600 varieties of seeds in its Seed Bank, and the Native Apple Tree Collection is also located at its extensive heritage gardens.
