Library preparing for outside hours access

No, it's not airport-type security before getting into the Kilcullen Community Library, it's preparatory work towards providing Library access when no staff are working, writes Brian Byrne.

Although the access won't happen for some time, it is part of the County Kildare Library Service's forward plan that staff don't necessarily need to be around for Library members to be able to browse, return and take out books.

While the sensor doors and CCTV will monitor actual activity in the Library, access through the main door will require a Library Membership Card with either swipe or PIN capability, or both.

Our Librarian Julie O'Donoghue sees it as a big plus for Kilcullen's Library members, when it happens, as it will much extend the usefulness of the facility, currently open on a part-time basis.

"Everybody who would like to use the Library can't always make it in during the times we're open," she says. "For instance, both parents may be out to work during the day, and Friday night or Saturday morning may not suit because of other family commitments."

As noted, it's a while away yet. But it is definitely coming.
