Major new piece from Kilcullen sculptor

The unveiling of the latest public sculpture by Kilcullen artist Noel Scullion will take place in St Brigid's Square in Kildare town on Friday 22 September, writes Brian Byrne.

'Hearts of Oak' was commissioned to mark Kildare's achievement as 'Ireland's cleanest town 2016' by Irish Business Against Litter.

The event at 12 noon will be in the presence of Mayor of Kildare Cllr Martin Miley Jr and the Mayor of the Kildare-Newbridge Municipal District, Cllr Sean Power. It will also be the launch event for County Kildare's Culture Night Programme 2017.

The piece is made from both Wicklow and Galway granite stone, and is a representation of a split acorn from which another oak will eventually grow.

It is being funded by the Tomar Trust, set up by Cork philanthropist Tom Cavanagh and the initiative has been managed by the Kildare County Arts Service. Further information is available from lrussell@kildarecoco.ie.

Two major pieces of the artist's work include the 'spear' monument in the Dun Ailinne Interpretive Park at Nicholastown and the 'Magician' at the bridge marking the achievements of Kilcullen Development Association.
