New multicultural magazine
Kilcullen-born Garreth Byrne is a contributor to a new magazine for the immigrant population in Ireland, We R Multicultural Ireland.
Garreth has an article on Music in Africa, drawing on his experiences as a teacher in Zambia, Tanzania and Malawi over many years. He subsequently moved to China where he taught English in a number of universities in that vast country.
In his piece in this, the second, edition of We R, he looks at ancient and modern musical expression on the African continent, and examines both the influence of church music and modern day pop music in an urban context.
It is one of a number of articles he will be writing for the magazine, which is edited by a South African living in Co Louth and has pieces ranging from personal experiences of immigrants in Ireland through food recipes, to information on different cultures.
Garreth is now retired and lives in Co Leitrim. He is pictured above with some of his students in China when he worked at Jilin Agricultural University in Changchun.
