Badminton update
It has been a massive couple of weeks for both the Kilcullen senior and juvenile club in the leagues, cups and opens, writes Enda O'Neill, PRO of the Kilcullen Badminton Club.
The senior club have qualified for two Dublin District League finals with Sinead's Ladies 1 Division 3 beating An Caislain Nua 3-0 in their semi final at Baldoyle Friday last April 17. Murt's Mix 2 Division 3 team also made the finals but in a more difficult fashion. The unlucky opponents this time were Boyne, after a tight match the score was 3-3 on matches, Boyne had also matched KBC on sets so it went to point countback where KBC had 13 points to spare, putting a delighted Murt and company into the finals, well done to all and good luck in your finals.
Sarah's Mix 5 Grade 4 SWL team have also made it through to the SWL Cup final after beating league champions Ballinabranna 5-2. This was a real grudge match after the Balinabranna side had beaten the KBC outfit in the league final on sets. In that final both teams were locked 4-4 on matches only for it to be snatched from KBC by two sets. Sarah and her team will hope to end their season on a high when they play Ballinkillin in Carlow Lawn Tennis Club in the Final on Tuesday 21 April, good luck to Sarah and her motley crew!
KBC are also proud to announce that they are Leinster Champions after beating Portarlington last week in the Division 2 Leinster final. KBC will now represent the Dublin League and Leinster in the All Ireland Finals later in the month — could the club win a second All Ireland? We will have to wait and see. Best of luck to proud captain Dave and his team, Lynsey, Annette, Norrie, Sinead, Murt, Darren and Gareth.
In the Good Friday Open there was some success for the club with Tara and Enda winning the Division 6 Mix, Sinead and Annette took the Ladies Division 2 and Jen Monaghan with partner Sinead Willis (St Laurence's) taking the Division 5 Ladies. Congrats also to the Grade 4 and 5 Kilcullen Men — Vincent and Enda have made it through to the Grade 4 Leinster Individual Semi Finals, while Sean and Ian Knight (Kildare CYMS) made it through to the Grade 5 semis, both being played in Baldoyle next Sunday good luck to the lads.
Finally a big congratulations to Gareth Hogan, coach of the County Kidare Juvenile team, and two of KBC’s own, Ciaran and Kevin Downey. On Sunday April 19 the U14 Kildare team were crowned the All Ireland Champions after beating the competition from the other provencies. Gareth (who is also the Kilcullen coach) along with his team have worked really hard to achieve this great accolade.
