'The Brans' to resurrect 'Capers' on Sunday night
Nobody new to Kilcullen or Brannockstown would remember the 'Capers' of the late 70s and early 80s, writes Brian Byrne. But for those of us who were there then, they remain an iconic memory which showed just how much talent can be found when there is community competition to spur it on.
Simply, the Capers were an annual series of variety shows put on in the Town Hall by the various areas which comprised Kilcullen Community Council. For most of a decade, they were the high point of the year (or low, if your area/pub/organisation didn't win). Competition was fierce, and often engendered both passion and paranoia.
Well, this coming Sunday, the famous 'Brans' are reviving their own memories of the Capers, specifically with performances from the show of 1982, and also from the 'Treasure Island' and variety show put on in 1994.
'Memories of the Past' gets under way at 7pm sharp on Sunday evening in the Town Hall Theatre. The proceeds are in the best Brannockstown cause, the Tidy Town Summer Planting which makes the village a most pretty place in the middle of the year.
Well worth the few hours, craic guaranteed.
