Kilcullen is heart of county P&P

A pair of Kildare Pitch & Putt teams which has a very strong Kilcullen involvement will be representing the county in the All-Ireland competitions in the second week in September, writes Brian Byrne.

Both Mens and Ladies Inter County teams will be hoping to win a trophy which was last brought to Kildare in 2000.

In the recent Leinster Inter-County finals, held in Tullamore, the Kildare Men's team won their section, and the Ladies' team were runners-up in theirs. It was the Men's first time to win the Leinster event, while the Ladies have won several times in both the provincial and national contests.

In the All-Ireland, up to 19 teams from all over the country will be playing.

"Kilcullen players have long been a backbone of the county team," says Liam Sherry, the Kilcullen club's chairman and also chairman of the Kildare County Board.

St Bridgets' membership is on the rise again this year, after a dip over the last decade, something which Liam attributes in part to the popularity of golf over pitch & putt during the 'Celtic Tiger' years.

"In fact, we also now have a lot of Juvenile members coming through, which is a good sign for the future of the club."
