Working on Christmas lights

Work on setting up the Christmas lights will begin later this week, in conjunction with removing the last of the window boxes which have given Kilcullen such a colourful aspect in recent months.

At the most recent meeting of Kilcullen Community Action, it was commented that the 'flowers just don't want to die', as they have lasted much longer than expected.

The meeting also decided to relocate a number of the pavement flower tubs because they are no longer necessary with the success of the window box initiative kick-started by Brian Fallon.

"Many of them are lost anyhow, behind parked cars," meeting chairman Noel Clare said. He added that he had already ordered bulbs for the tub displays for next year.

The meeting also discussed the 'very positive' fact that there had been very little vandalism of the tubs this year. This was in stark contrast to the experiences of some neighbouring towns of comparable size in the area.

"Maybe people are just getting used to them being there," Noel suggested.

The meeting heard that there had been some generous donations for the flowers initiative, which has cost in the region of 15,000 euros.

"Some more are promised," J J Warren added.
