Berneys being refurbished
A major refurbishment of Berneys pub will, among other things, see the removal of the slated frontage which has been a feature of the premises for many years.
The work is being undertaken by the new owner of the premises, Brian Fallon, formerly of the Red House in Newbridge which was destroyed by a fire last year.
Mr Fallon bought Berneys from Gerry Conlan, the Naas-based developer who over the last decade had bought up several market square properties with a view to building an extensive town centre development.
That plan now appears to have been put in abeyance, and the Diary understands that a local businessman is in negotiations to acquire much of the remainder of the Conlan holdings.
Meantime, the refurbishments in Berneys have already resulted in a makeover for the back rooms of the property, with the former stone-walled store which had been used as a minor functions room being converted into a much more 'friendly' environment.
A new outside beer garden area is part of the refurbishment already completed, and the former billiards room is now to be a reception area for functions as well as being available for extra dining facilities for the 'Cafe Tomat' restuarant which moved into Berneys following the destruction of the Red House.
The refurbishment work has also included a complete makeover for the toilets in the facility.
The next stage is an upgrading of the bar area.
