Bridge plan switch?

It seems that the plans for the bridge hit an unexpected snag when it came to placing the new lights in the scheme.

The original plan -- as far as we know in the absence of a published scheme -- was to mount the light standards on the edge of the footpaths, in line with the bollards.

But then, we're told, it was found that there wasn't enough 'ground' underneath to properly support the standards, and it was decided that they'd revert to the old system and put them on the stone-clad concrete uprights between the aluminium railings.

The hanging baskets standards which were going to be on the bridge walls are now to be placed where the lights were to be.

They will have inbuilt irrigation systems too.

Trouble is, it looks like they're going to be low enough to swing out of. And if they are as low as they look, that's what will happen. Every night when the pubs close.

Maybe we've got it all wrong, though. We wait with bated proverbial to see. And also for an answer to a query on the matter made this late afternoon to Kildare County Council.

Answers are stacking up somewhere.

Brian Byrne.

[BTW: We should say that it is all looking very nice, and commendation must be given for the speed at which the work was carried out.]
