Tidying effort poorly supported

A poor support for practical Tidy Towns work was noted by KCA chairman Kieran Forde at the recent meeting of the organisation.

He said only four people had turned out to the 'tidy up' operation in The Valley the previous Saturday. He also noted that following a plea at the last meeting for volunteers to help take down the Christmas lights, 'a grand total of one' turned up. "Me," he said.

In a later discussion about the rubbish lodged in the ditches on either side of the Athy Road (above and below), south of the motorway, Kieran Forde noted that on previous occasions Tidy Towns people had cleared that area.

"I'm certainly not not going to do any clearing outside the speed limits again," he said.

Ronan Murphy said that if the bin charges were increased, 'we'll see more rubbish there'. Siobhan Tutty-Bardon agreed, and said this was already evident when crossing The Curragh. "You see a new bag dumped every day," she said.

The discussion had been triggered by a comment from Niall McDonnell, who said the litter in the area was 'disgraceful.
