Sarah Swaine cheque to help 93 children with cancer

A cheque for €4,636 is on its way to the children's cancer charity Aoibheann's Pink Tie following last night's roundup evening by the Sarah Swaine Memorial Run organisers, writes Brian Byrne.

The evening in The Spout included an auction of racing gear worn by jockey Kevin Manning when he won the English Derby on New Approach in 2015, signed by Kevin and a number of other jockeys.

Music by CatC and John Swaine kept the evening going until after the auction and raffle of many spot prizes donated by businesses and individuals.

Thanking everyone for all the support to the Run and the evening, Sarah Swaine's aunt, Carrie Swayne, said the amount raised would allow 93 children with cancer to have a weekend away.

The total included €1,320 raised in Cross and Passion College by students in a Civvies Day.

Family music caps brilliant Sarah Swaine Memorial Run

The 367 people who registered for the inaugural Sarah Swaine Memorial 5K/10K Run in Kilcullen today was its own affirmation of public generosity to personal tragedy, writes Brian Byrne, but the subsequent musical evening in the Hideout tonight was a compelling family and friends event.

With Sarah's father John singing many of the songs himself through the evening, the contributions from Sarah's youngest sister Bethany, aged nine, and from her other sister Kayla (15) both entertained brilliantly and offered an insight into a family for which music is obviously an intrinsic part of their life.

The race and its evening event raised more than €5,000 for CanTeen, a charity that supports teenagers with cancer, providing trips to places around Ireland and abroad which help to give those involved a more normal teenage life. The money was way beyond the €2,000 or so expected by Sarah's aunt Carrie Swayne, one of the prime movers behind the event.

Accepting the cheque, Evelyn Griffith of CanTeen said that it would provide up to 40 of their clients with a weekend away. She paid tribute to eveyone who had been involved in the fundraiser, and particularly to Sarah's family for their support for CanTeen.

The first five in of 257 registered with Pop Up Racing in the 5K were Mariusz Olejnicrak (0:17:14,47), Shane Scully (0:17:31,72), Gary Scully (0:17:41,00), David McDonnell (0:18:37,38) and Sharon Brannisan (0:19:47,03).

Of the 110 who were registered in the 10K, the first five home were Darren McConville (0:41:48,60), Michal Zielinski (0:41:59,60), Eugene Kavanagh (0:42:18,62), Emma Boland (0:42:36,21) and Robert Gravenor (0:43:33,28).

Childcare Centre children raise money for Sarah Swaine Run

The children from the Kilcullen Community Childcare Centre recently undertook a sponsored walk to raise money for the upcoming Sarah Swaine Memorial Run, writes Brian Byrne.

Doing their walk five times around the soccer pitch end of the Kilcullen Community Centre campus, they raised a terrific total of €515. Some of them are pictured here handing over the cheque to Carrie Swayne and Gretta Swaine.

The children with the cheque are Fabia, Naoise and Alanna, and Gda Joanne O'Sullivan is included in the picture with the youngest 'walker', Mollie. A great achievement.

Sarah Swaine passed away at the age of 19 on 7 January 2016, following a long battle with cancer. Carrie is leading the Memorial 10K Run and 5K Family Walk project, on 7 January 2018, to aid the charity CanTeen Ireland.

CanTeen works with young people who have or have had cancer, which allows them to meet up in a relaxed and informal setting with other teenagers who are in the same situation as Sarah was.

No 1 Fitness running in Sarah Swaine memorial

Kilcullen-based No 1 Fitness has established a group to take part in the upcoming Sarah Swaine Memorial 5K/10K Run.

The race is on Sunday next 7 January.

Registration on the day begins at 11am in Kilcullen Community Centre. It can also be done in advance online at popupraces.ie.

The race is in aid of the CanTeen charity that helps teenagers suffering with cancer.

It is being organised in memory of Sarah Swaine, who died from cancer two years ago at the age of 19.

Perfect day for Sarah Swaine Memorial Run 2019

There were 250 registered runners in today's second annual Sarah Swaine Memorial Run in Kilcullen, writes Brian Byrne.

In a festive atmosphere and taking advantage of perfect running conditions, the first contestant home in the 10K did the circuit in 0:37:06, while the first 5K runner home completed it in 0:15:56.

The winner of the 5K race, which had 180 entrants, was Shane Coffey of Naas AC, from Conor Tiernan of Hyper speed and No 1 Fitness, Jeff Delaney of No 1 Fitness, Michal Zielinski of No 1 Fitness, and Craig Holman. The first women entrants home were Maria Cuddy of Portlaoise AC, Sandra Fitzpatrick, Claire Brady of Newbridge AC, Lisa Donlan of Newbridge AC, and Mary Egan.

The winner of the 10K was Damian Burke, from Jacek Latala, Eugene Kavanagh, Derek Brannigan, and Emma Boland of Newbridge AC. Following Emma in the women's race were Helen Murphy, Paula Guinan, Rachel Dunphy, and Joanne McEntaggart.

The event is run in memory of Sarah Swaine who passed away in January 2016 at the age of 19 after battling cancer. The proceeds this year will go to the children's cancer charity Aoibheann's Pink Tie.

Carrie thanks all who helped with Sarah Swaine Run

With the final tally from the Sarah Swaine Memorial Run in Kilcullen now at €5,350, organiser and aunt of Sarah, Carrie Swayne, has expressed her thanks to everyone who helped and took part, writes Brian Byrne.

Individuals, school pupils, and businesses across mid- and south Kildare and Carlow all supported the effort, which raised money for the CanTeen charity that helped Kilcullen teenager Sarah Swaine while she was dealing with the cancer to which she finally succumbed.

The first place trophies for the run, which attracted 367 registered participants, were provided by Douglas Jewellers in Carlow, while Aldi in Athy donated water and banana importers Ffyffes provided 300 pieces of their fruit for the runners.

The medals for those who took part were paid for by donations from a wide range of sources, including Kilcullen Community Childcare Centre; Colaiste Lorcan and Scoil Diarmada in Castledermot; Hillview Nursing Home in Carlow; Ecokem, Liftboy, World of Catering, the Spout Bar, and Appleton Auctioneers in Kilcullen; the Crookstown Inn, Ballitore and Paul Byrne Car Sales in Timolin.

Spot prizes for the raffle in The Hideout after the Run were donated by Zovi Hairdrssers, Raths Londis, Horans Centre and Stacks Pharmacy in Castledermot; Eurospar, Fallons, Emporium Hairdressers, and McTernans in Kilcullen; and Villa Clothing, Sam McCauleys, Supermacs, Talbot Hotel, McDonalds, Dinn Ri Hotel, the Roadhouse Restaurant, Car Zone, PR Reilly, and O'Brien's Fine Wines, all in Carlow.

"I would also like to thank all the volunteers who came on the day," Carrie Swayne adds. "These include the scouts, St John's Ambulance, and the local gardai in Kilcullen for their time."

A cheque will be presented to the CanTeen charity during the music evening, to which all participants in the race are invited. There will also be a raffle for a large number of spot prizes which have been donated.

The organisers of the race, which commemorates teenager Sarah Swaine who died two years ago from cancer, would still be very grateful for donations of sandwiches and baked products for the participants on the day.

Sarah Swaine Memorial Run sponsor 'urgently needed'

The 2019 Sarah Swaine Memorial Run may be cancelled unless a sponsor can be found for the medals, writes Brian Byrne.

Sponsorship of €2,500 is needed to pay for the medals for the event. The VAT content can be recovered by a VAT-registered company, and the sponsor's name will be on the medal ribbons. In addition, a planned Facebook video of the event will highlight any sponsor.

But an appeal made during the summer for a sponsor hasn't had any success, and the organisers say unless one is found within four weeks the run will have to be cancelled. "That would be very disappointing considering the level of support that was given for the first run in remembrance of Sarah," says her aunt Carrie Swayne.

Sarah Swaine Memorial Run registration in Parish Centre

A note that the Sarah Swaine Memorial Run will take place today with registration at the PARISH CENTRE from 11am, writes Brian Byrne.

There are medals for all registered finishers, whether running, walking, or strolling with their families.

The event is a 5K fun run/walk and 10K run in memory of Sarah Swaine who passed away in January 2016 at the age of 19 after battling cancer.

The proceeds this year will go to the children's cancer charity Aoibheann's Pink Tie.

The race will start just before the traffic lights on the main street in Kilcullen.

Sponsor sought for next Sarah Swaine Memorial Run

A call has gone out for a sponsor for the medals for the next Sarah Swaine Memorial Run, scheduled for January 2020.

The race raises funds for young people's cancer charities, in memory of local teenager Sarah who died at the age of 19. Some 260 runners took part in the 2019 Run.

The 2019 efforts resulted in a cheque for €4,636 for the children's cancer charity Aoibheann's Pink Tie, while the inaugural Run last year raised funds for CanTeen.

The family organisers are now seeking a sponsor for next year's medals. In return their name will be printed on the medal ribbon. Anyone interested can contact Carrie Swayne on 086 0743259.

Volunteers needed for Sarah Swaine Memorial Race

Volunteers are being sought to help manage the Sarah Swaine Memorial 10K Race and 5K Walk taking place on the second anniversary of Sarah's death, 7 January 2018, writes Brian Byrne.

Make A Wish to benefit from 2020 Sarah Swaine run

Start of the 2019 Run.

The next Sarah Swaine Memorial Run will raise funds for the Make A Wish Foundation.

The Run/Walk will take place on Sunday 12 January, setting out at 1pm from Kilcullen Parish Centre.

The event is in memory of 19-year-old Sarah, who lost her battle with cancer in 2017.

The sponsor of the medals for the run is Kilcullen-based premium leather crafts company CarveOn.

Prior registration is available at popupraces.ie. This is NOT a chipped time event.
