Planning lodged for EV charging expansion at Kilcullen Circle K

A planning application for a 10-unit high-power electric vehicle charging hub at the Kilcullen Circle K M9 Service Area has been lodged with Kildare County Council, writes Brian Byrne.
The proposal, by Beech Hill Gateway Services DAC, includes associated infrastructure and spaces for charging 20 vehicles at a time. A new canopy with associated illuminated signage and a new modular ESB Substation are also in the application as well as associated revisions to existing landscaped area and a pedestrian walk way.
The full details are available at the Kildare County Council planning portal.  Submissions can be made up to 21 January 2025. The file number is 2461316.
The location is one of 17 on major roads around the country in which charging 'pools' will be built with banks of charging points, according to an announcement made in July.

Upgrade planned for Circle K EV charging

The Circle K M9 service area outside Kilcullen is to get a major electric car charging upgrade, writes Brian Byrne. It is one of 17 locations on major roads around the country in which charging 'pools' will be built with banks of charging points.
In total, according to Transport Minister Eamon Ryan, 131 new Fast and Ultra-Fast recharging points will be established. The infrastructure will be built by private business, grant aided by the Department of Transport.
Though timelines for individual locations have not yet been detailed, all are expected to be in place by the end of 2025, as will a second tranche of grant-aided 'pools' on the country's national 'N' roads.
Ultra-Fast charging points can deliver power at up to 350kW. The current charging points at the Kilcullen site are one each 50kW and 150kW. There are frequently a number of electric cars waiting their turns to get on one of the units.
As yet there is no indication of the number of  changers to be available in individual pools, but will likely vary between four and eight depending on the traffic levels on the route.
