Today, Sunday, 16 November, marks the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims and their families, writes Brian Byrne. The day commemorates those who have lost their lives or have been seriously injured on the roads, while also recognising the families, friends, and communities that continue to bear the burden of loss.
Anne Graham, Chairperson of the Road Safety Authority, says the occasion is an important moment to pause, reflect, and renew a shared commitment to safer roads and responsible behaviour for all who use them.
So far in 2025, 147 people have lost their lives on Irish roads — three more than at the same point last year (UPDATE: And reports this morning of 'a number of fatalities' in a crash in Co Louth). Behind every number is a person, a family, and a community forever changed.
