First 2025 meeting of writers a de-stressing occasion
Aptly named, the Kilcullen Creative Writers Group members came up with a some very imaginative topics in pieces presented at their first 2025 meeting last evening, writes Brian Byrne.
A futuristic cross-galaxy trading company projecting the plundering 18th-century colonial behemoth versions on Earth into the Star Trek space. The chilling potential in the tale of a woman fleeing the advancing Soviet army in WW2 Germany. The story of an unwilling immigrant to Ireland and their repatriation to their homeland. Those were just some amongst other equally compelling pieces of local writing which brought both thoughtful silent listening and unrestrained laughter in an evening that absolutely de-stressed any residual angst from the turn of the year.
It's the thing about a local writers group — you never know what's going to come from the pens or keyboards of the participants. The other thing is that everyone's contribution is afforded equal attention in a friendly, safe and non-judgemental space. The current Creative Writers Group was set up in February 2023 as part of the Brigid 1500 programme and has hosted writing workshops, Open Mic evenings, and members have also won awards. Selected pieces are also published in each issue of The Bridge. The group is moderated for this year by Mary Orford with Dawn Behan acting as administrator.
Other topics that came through last evening included timely life advice to a protagonist from a mysterious stranger, contemplation on an upcoming stay in a lighthouse, an unsettling story of a sudden disappearance and efforts to solve it, a wuthering dream about Heathcliff, reconnecting through a class reunion with a loved city and family memories, and a hilarious poem A Wife is not just for Christmas.
New members always welcomed. Anyone interested in joining the group can contact Mary or Dawn on Brigid1500CWG@gmail.com. Meetings are generally on the third Wednesday of the month, but in February will again be on the preceding Monday, 10 February at 7pm.
