A feasibility study is currently being prepared to explore the potential of an amenity trail from Corbally Harbour to Newbridge via the River Liffey corridor, with a further link to Kilcullen along the Liffey as part of it, writes Brian Byrne. The news was welcomed by Cllr Tracey O'Dwyer at the recent meeting of the Kildare-Newbridge MD.
The response was to a question for a status update on the councillor's previous motion asking for such a study, in relation to a potential 50km canal amenity loop to include Pollardstown Fen and the Milltown Canal feeder.
The study is being part-funded by the national Outdoor Recreational Infrastructure Scheme (ORIS). The meeting heard that further links from Newbridge northwards are outside the scope of the current study, but the 50km amenity loop is included in the Newbridge Area Based Transport Assessment which is currently being finalised. A study to explore these further links can be considered in the future, subject to funding and resources.
"I was delighted to get a positive response to this question and it’s great to see this project progress through to feasibility stage," Cllr O'Dwyer said after the meeting.
Corbally Harbour was the terminus for the Herbertstown Branch (aka Corbally Line) from the Grand Canal via Naas and Sallins, and serviced the heavy goods transport needs of the Kilcullen and surrounding areas in the heyday of the canal system.
