Old Kilcullen's Ivan Keatley has been re-elected to Kildare County Council on the second count in the Athy LEA, writes Brian Byrne. He received 1,653 first preference votes in this election, second to Labour's Aoife Breslin who topped the poll with 2,347. The quota in the area was 1,658.
It's Ivan's second election and third time a serving councillor, as he was co-opted to the Council in 2011 to replace Martin Heydon when he was elected as a TD. A native of Ballymount and a St Laurence's stalwart, he has prioritised improvements in local public transport, securing the 880 bus route for his local area and fighting for improvements to local roads.
After his latest win, he told the Kildare Nationalist that the biggest change he found in his latest campaign was the number of electric gates in his very rural area. "But the people haven't changed," he said. "They're great. Even people that don’t like your politics and they’re not going to vote for you, they’re respectful."
