Council to inspect dangerous footpath

Part of the footpath.

A joint inspection of a section of footpath in Kilcullen for potential of slips, trips and falls, will be carried out by Kildare County Council officials, writes Brian Byrne. The May meeting of the Kildare-Newbridge Municipal District was told that the MD office will liaise with the Council's Access Officer to carry out the inspection.
The move follows a motion by Cllr Tracey O'Dwyer at the meeting seeking a health and safety audit of the path from the traffic lights to the Credit Union on Main Street. Officials said any works will be subject to budget availability.
The news was welcomed by Cllr O'Dwyer, who has raised her concerns for this section of path on numerous occasions. "I know many people have fallen along this section, either on the way to the two doctor surgeries or the chemist," she added. "It is a really uneven level of path with raised and broken services coverings and is in desperate need of being made safe to ensure there are no further slips, trips and falls." She said she hopes that following the inspection, funding can be found to make safe the path.
At the same meeting, in answer to a question from Cllr O’Dwyer about whether the path from the motorway bridge to Nicholastown is listed for resurfacing due to tree roots having lifted large sections of the path, officials said the MD office have not finalised their footpath programme of works yet, and that budgets are limited for 2024.
