The need for a 'gateway' design to alert motorists that they are entering a town, on the Kilcullen approach road from Naas, was raised today at the meeting of the Kildare-Newbridge MD, writes Brian Byrne.
Bringing a speeding issue forward in a motion, Cllr Tracey O'Dwyer said a visual and physical alert is needed in the vicinity of the Lui na Gréine housing estate. The councillor noted that the former main road from Dublin was particularly wide, has outdated speed limit signage and lacks road markings to show motorists that they need to reduce speed and adjust their driving behaviour.
She said that when the Lui na Gréine estate had been completed, speed signs were not moved to take this into account. "The town speed limit should have been adjusted to reflect this." In addition to speed, there is a further road safety issue for residents trying to exit the estate.
A report from officials said the area has not been assessed for traffic calming measures and is not on the schedule of works for 2024. "A determination on the most appropriate means to deliver this work will be made during the year in the context of future work programmes," the report concluded.
Cllr O'Dwyer said she would follow up with the area engineer to see if line markings or a table top traffic calming infrastructure could be considered at the location with the assistance of LPT funds.
