Positive response to Brigid 1500 Film Season opener
The organisers of Kilcullen Bridge Cinema would like to thank everyone who attended the opening of the Brigid 1500 Film Season in Kilcullen Town Hall and Heritage Centre on Tuesday night last, writes Teresa Nurse. There was a good crowd and many were taking a chance on a film they had never heard of.
The opening film, Herself, was very apt and St Brigid even got a mention. Clare Dunne starred as Sandra, a Dublin cleaner fleeing domestic abuse, striving to make a fresh start. Inspired by the story of St Brigid’s cloak that her daughter recounts, Sandra is empowered to challenge the system and build her own house. The film is powerful and was sometimes difficult watch, but ultimately heart-rending and uplifting.
Audience reaction was extremely positive. One seasoned film fan said it one of the best films he’d ever seen. The performances of all actors, and especially the two young girls, were singled out by many as exceptional.
The next film shows Tuesday 6 February. It is Róise & Frank, a charming Irish-language film. It is a comedy-drama that will make you laugh out loud and maybe cry. Set in the scenic Ring Gaeltacht area in Co Waterford it tells the story of the recently widowed Róise, who believes that a stray dog embodies the spirit of her late husband Frank. It is a delicately told story of grief, loss and remembering.
The Irish Times — “Róise and Frank is a genuinely delightful film”
Film Ireland — “A wonderful story of finding hope in the darkest of places”
