Tesco ready for Deposit Return Scheme

Nine Tesco stores across County Kildare will have Deposit Return Scheme (DRS) machines installed from 1 February to allow people to get refunds on a range of drinks containers, writes Brian Byrne.
The introduction of DRS means customers will be charged a small refundable deposit, automatically added from 1 February, on plastic bottles, aluminium, or steel cans. Customers can then claim the deposit back by returning the empty container. The initiative is in association with Re-turn Ireland and trials last year in Tesco stores in Drogheda and Malahide were deemed successful.
All Tesco's machines will be indoors, with help on hand to guide customers through the process.
There are conditions for successful use of DRS machines. Do not crush cans or bottles. Make sure containers are empty and keep the lids on bottles. Only drinks bottles and cans can be put in machine — NO dairy product bottles or food cans. Look for the Re-Turn logo on the container – otherwise it will be rejected by the machine.
The machine gives coupons which are accepted at all Tesco store tills or can be refunded at the Customer Service Desk.
