Saturday 24 February has been set for the community day on Kilcullen GAA's 'Field of Dreams' to plant 2,000 native tree saplings, writes Brian Byrne. The trees will be planted around the boundaries of the 8-acre site, on which the club is building new pitches, a Skills Arena, a 1.2km cycle-walkway, and extra car parking.
Kilcullen Community Action has sourced the trees, and is asking for as many volunteers as possible to turn on the to help with the planting on the day. The saplings are being provided through the 100 Million Trees Project, which aims to plant that number of native Irish trees across Ireland over the next ten years.
As a beginning of the initiative, KCA workers and volunteers planted ten mature young trees on part of the Field of Dreams site before Christmas.
Martin Murphy, chairman of the Field of Dreams Committee, says the trees will mark out the boundaries of the overall campus. "We don't plan to fence the site, as it will be open to the public with the cycle-walkway as part of the whole concept," he told the Diary.
KCA have also recently planted new trees in the Valley and along the New Abbey Road.
