Shop local this Christmas

Usually at this time of the year, the Diary posts a feature on local businesses and their offerings for Christmas, writes Brian Byrne. But because your editor was abroad for a month with family, it wasn't possible to compile and curate it this year.
So instead, this is a general call for shopping local, wherever possible, this Christmas.
Remember, each euro spent in a local business can generate up to four times that within the community's economy. That's because each of those businesses supported provides local employment and wages, a large proportion of which are also spent locally. The multiplier effect is at its most efficient if we also try to ensure that what we spend our money on is locally produced.
So, do your level best to spend your hard-earned cash as close to your doorstep as possible this Christmas. While Kilcullen has a relatively small number of retail outlets compared to other nearby towns, they all have the potential to provide your family's needs in food, drink, and presents. Remember too that our local restaurants offer vouchers that can make very acceptable presents.
And don't forget our community's online businesses, particularly in women's clothing, toys, and household and lifestyle goods. The local ones are supporting local owners, who will spend back locally.
Think local this Christmas ... and through 2024. Keeping your business in town keeps your town in business.
