Explore your archive week - 7

Explore Your Archive is an annual campaign in Ireland and the UK to highlight archive collections, with a different theme assigned to each day, writes Mary Orford. As part of our Brigid 1500 project, we thought it was timely to showcase a few photos from the Meitheal of Memories archive of our community. Thanks to all the donors, these scenes of past life in Kilcullen are captured and stored for future generations.

7. Challenge/Dúshlán 1st December
A young Father, later to be Bishop, Peter Rogan. Born in Gibraltar, he and his family ended up living in Brigade Lodge, Sunnyhill. Having trained with the Mill Hill Missionaries, Peter travelled to British East Africa, with a mission to set up churches, schools and colleges. Bishop Rogan met that and many more challenges in what is now Cameroon.  He served as a military chaplain during World War One (the war had spread to East Africa) and was awarded the British War Medal and Victory Medal. Bishop Peter Rogan died at Freshford on 1st December, 1970.
